I checked in with Shani, creator of @theblackbeerexperience and theblackbeerexperience.com.
How did The Black Beer Experience get started?
My wife and I travel a lot and going to breweries is our thing. One thing we’ve noticed is that there weren’t many people who looked like us. I mentioned that I just wanted a group of Black folx to enjoy beer with… there wasn’t a group that existed so she suggested I create one… and I did.
What’s next for The Black Beer Experience?
I’m hoping this year we can create more in person events. I am starting a conversation in the Nashville community with nonprofits and breweries that will hopefully lead to what’s after Black is Beautiful beers. I have some ideas in mind but this takes community input.
What does the craft beer industry do well? What needs work?
Craft beer actually does “community” really well, it just needs to diversify it and create equitable opportunities. This community is really no different than any other industry, we just have the opportunity to change that in a way that’s fun because we have alcohol.
What beers have you enjoyed lately?
I had to check my recent photos but two that stood out were: Evergreen Terrace by Pontoon and Bad Bunny Pie by Tripping Animals.
